FOLLOW THE BUNNY: The first solo exhibition of AIKO in India
Presenting the Works of AIKO
Carrying a spray can with a heart, the small furry mammal with long ears, a short fluffy tail, and large hind legs stares at you through walls – white and black – imprinted with patterns and stories that are not oppressed by gravity. Conceived much before it was stenciled for the first time at Banksy’s studio in London in 2005, the bunny has traveled across the globe. Mutating through different forms, inhabiting diverse spaces, cutting a smile or wonder through the nooks of concrete cities, the bunny stands for freedom, love, peace and liberation.
In this exhibition, bunnies are surrounded by pin-ups, manga and kabuki characters, and above all are manifestations of stories – once unattended, now famed legendary.
Follow the bunny and follow AIKO, who paints hard and shouts louder with desires of art that were dreamt of in the streets and homes of New York in the 90s, to then enter into studios and galleries – now yearning to hijack the in-betweens of bodies, cities and institutions.
These actions of resistance, so feminine, conjure a serious romance on a subway where empty frames with interstellar activities, lady butterflies, and a masquerade of girls with spray cans roll up the planet with bunnies who lap around to hold up half the sky.
