Al-Qawi Nanavati started writing letters to her late mother, Mumtaz to honour her legacy. She writes, “the “Letters to My Mother” series initially emerged as a personal means for me to communicate with my late mother. It began with interactive pieces, where viewers were invited to symbolically take a part of the letter, thereby sending my messages to her. This series evolved over time, encompassing paintings of letters composed after her sudden demise in 2018. The series remains ongoing, and as life unfolds, new perspectives introduce fresh materials, enriching this cathartic journey for me.”
The artworks have subsequently taken diverse forms and included materials such as woven fabric, clay tapestries, paper mache, and embroidery.
